What This Job Actually Is

Start concrete, before any definitions. A lawsuit has been filed. The law requires that the person being sued be formally notified, in a way the court can verify later. Someone has to physically put those documents in that person's hands, and then swear to the court, in writing, exactly how and when it happened.

That's the job. Two halves: the delivery, and the sworn account of the delivery.

New servers focus almost entirely on the first half. The delivery is the visible part, the part with the doorstep and the conversation and the occasional difficulty. It feels like the work.

The second half is where careers end. The document you sign afterward is a sworn statement filed in a court case. Everything this course teaches about honesty, records, and returns exists because of that document.

Keep both halves in mind from your first day. A server who is excellent at doors and careless with paperwork is a liability. A server who is careful with both is valuable for a long time.
